5 Practical Ways to Reduce Energy Consumption for Schools
With the ESOS Phase 2 data capture period beginning in January 2018, it’s timefor schools to start thinking about ESOS.
HVAC systems, lighting, ICT and the catering equipment usually account for the bulk of a school energy consumption. With the ever rising energy bill and the concerns about climate change, the cost associated with all of these can be easily reduced, if the business knows where to look at and what to do.
Install occupancy sensors and timers. These sensors can help reduce the lighting cost by up to 30%.
Labelling kitchen equipment with their required preheating time can help the staff switching them on only when needed, thus helping to reduce the energy used by cooking by up to 60%.
Ensure that the heating system is regularly checked and maintained. A well maintained boiler can save up to 10% on heating cost.
4. ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) Equipment
Install plug in seven-day timers. These can easily be fitted on communal equipment such as printers and photocopiers and will ensure that they are not left on out of hours.
5. Building Fabric
Typically, more than 60% of the heat loss in a building occurs through the building fabrics.
